Clinical Evaluation of Suspected Stomach Cancer by Gastrofiberscopy

Abstract
This report is a clinical analysis of 168 cases of suspected stomach ca, who underwent gastrofiberscopy, at the Jeon ju Presbyterian Medical Center from December, 1971 to September, 1974. Overall, the peak age incidence was between 40 to 60 years, with 65% of patients falling in this range. Males predominated over females by a ratio of .3 1. More than 75% of the 168 complainted of epigastric pain or epigastric fullness. The duration of symptoms was less than one year, with 80% of patients falling in this range. There were no specific physical findings for patients with stomach ca. More than 80% of the 168 cases had radiologic evidence for gastric malignancy. Most frequent sites for involvements of stomach ,ca were the body and the antrum of stomach. All of the 168 were classified into 4 Borrmann¢¥s types depending upon the endoscopical macroscopic findings. Borrmann¢¥s type ff was most frequent at 25%, but the differences in percentage among Borrmann¢¥s types were not great. Positive tissue diagnosis for stomach ca by means -of gastrofiberscopic biopsy was 83. 1%. Among the 43 cases of stomach cancer who received surgical intervention, the patients who received radical gastrectomy belonged to Borrmann¢¥s type I , II or III. The rest who received palliative surgery belonged to Borrmann¢¥s type III, IV or undetermined type.
